“… God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out ‘Abba, Father!’” (Gal 4:6, NKJ)
The spirit of Moses was transferred to Joshua (Deut 34:9), as well as to seventy elders (Num 11:17); the spirit of Elijah was carried over to Elisha (2 Kin 21:5) – but God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts! Kelly Varner says of this Spirit of God: “His Spirit is holy, free of all condemnation, bitterness, revenge, and self-pity, which is the devil’s baby-sitter free of charge.” (The more excellent ministry, p. 95).
As you learn to walk in the perfect law of liberty under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, it does not mean that you can do just what you like – remember: you no longer belong to yourself (1 Cor 6:19). The whole of Romans chapter 7 deals with this spiritual battle between what I want in the spirit and what the flesh wants. As a result, the body can only but sin. But your focus is no longer on this. I delight myself, says Paul in Rom 7:22 “in the law of God according to the inward man”.
Remember, this inner man does not function according to external laws, but “according tot the promptings of the Holy Spirit”. The key word in this walk is obedience. If you begin to function in this way, then Rom 8:13 (Ampl) is of great importance: “For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live …”! You put the sinful nature to death THROUGH the Holy Spirit! You are not made holy by obeying laws, but by being obedient to the Spirit of God. For this reason Paul says on Gal 5:16: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” It is the sons of God who are led by the Spirit of God (Rom 8:14).
Satan, as the accuser of the brethren (Rev 12:10), wants to keep you in constant captivity through that which is still sinful in your life (Rom 7:23). But Rom 8:1-2 gives us the trump card against this: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” But it requires of us to move from disobedience to the wisdom of the just (Luke 1:17).
