“Have we not all one Father?”
(Mal 2:10, NKJV)
God is one of a kind, so to speak. There is no one like Him – a fact He not only proclaims himself – “’To whom then will you liken Me, or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One.” (Isa 40:26) and “Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me.” (Is 46:9) but which is also echoed by those who had come to know him:
- A number of times Moses says to Pharaoh – “there is no one like the LORD our God.” (Ex 8:10; 9:14).
- Along with the children of Israel Moses sings this song of victory when God triumphs over Pharaoh – ““Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” (Ex 15:11). He proclaims this same statement whenever faced with any of the obstacles they found on their way to the Promised Land (Deut 23:26) – there is no one like God!
- David rejoices about this fact – “Therefore You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.” (2 Sam 7:22). Elsewhere he prays, “Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord …” (Ps 86:8).
- And Jeremiah (10:6-7) spells it out – “Inasmuch as there is none like You, O LORD (You are great, and Your name is great in might), who would not fear You, O King of the nations … There is none like You.”
When Moses asks God how he should introduce Him to the Israelites, God presents himself as “I AM WHAT I AM” (Ex 3:13-15). There is no dispute about this – HE IS, and there is no one like him.
Which would clearly indicate that He is the only one of his kind, and thus a lonely Being. There is no partner, no mate, for Him. And as one of his personal characteristics is love (1 John 4:8), it means that that love cannot be demonstrated if there is no other being to love! Love is, after all, a transitive verb J. In the book of the prophet Malachi, the last word before 430 years of silence would descend before God would speak again, God asks through his prophet in Mal 2:10, “Have we not all one Father?” As part of the answer in verse 15 he spells out this mystery of God: “He seeks Godly offspring.” Indeed we all have only one Father.
God is. God is lonely. God seeks descendants.
