Day 234

“ … the thoughts of His heart …”

(Ps 33:11, NKJV)

It is practically impossible to measure or understand the soul dimension of God. Since God is and has been, and will be into all eternity, one would expect a certain monotony to spread across his Being. We suspect that He is quite bored with his insight concerning all things. Nothing can surprise Him; everything is exactly as He expects it to be. This view of God creates in us a sort of Ecclesiastics feeling of endless boredom, even despair – All that is, has been and shall always be. As we know God mostly as Spirit the creative facet of his soul dimension often bypasses us.

God clearly has a soul dimension – He has a mind, a will and emotions. Job 36:5 states that “He is mighty in strength of understanding”, indeed, “His understanding is unsearchable” (Isa 40:28). We know he has a will (Rom 12:2) and Scripture is full of indications of His being angry, loving, kind, or even hating – the whole plethora of emotions. This indicates that God can also be known in this dimension of His soul. Thus Jesus urges us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matt 22:37).

But it is often in the unexpected aspects of his Personality that I find great joy. Take a moment to think about 2 Sam 14:14, about God “devising plans” for you. How exactly does He consider different plans regarding our future? In Jer 29:11 He says He’s thinking about us – “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

We should not let the happening that was the creation of the first man pass us by. Clearly God must have devised extensive means to make this possible. Don Milam in The secret language of Eden beautifully describes this act as it was happening: “The Image-Maker made a move towards the creature. Man had been there in His thoughts, it seemed forever, and now he would stand before Him as living being, image of His image, creation of His love. Father could hardly wait to hold him in His arms.

“Compelled by the intense longing to experience Himself, Father placed His lips on the face of the man. As the warmth of Divine compassion pressed lovingly against the human vessel, God gathered Himself for the moment He had so long anticipated.

“Breathing in deeply and with one great force of spirit-wind, a surge of divine breath exploded, as it were His mouth, instantly filling every portion of the creature’s being. As celestial substance poured into the creature, lying still in Creator’s arms, and the first of a new species came into being.

“In that instant, divine life infused the lifeless matter … a life came forth, and a spirit was created. Man arose out of the darkness of nonbeing into the the majestic light of being …”

It could also be, as Milan Kundera could have said J – The incredible being of lightness, with an “eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor 4:17)! Sela.

  • Sela: Ask God what His thoughts are concerning you.
