Day 315

“For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

(Matt 26:28, NKJV)

The blood of Jesus ushers in the New Covenant between God and man. Take a moment to consider this thought; it has severe implications.

Firstly – it is only when accepting the blood of Jesus that you can be part of the New Covenant. Everyone else stands outside of it, firmly in the Old Covenant, “having no hope and without God in the world”. This includes the Jews. Since the “sacrifice and the offering” (Dan 9:27) stopped occurring after the city was destroyed (Dan 9:27) in 70 after Christ, an Anointed One (Dan 9:25) was raised in its stead. This Anointed one is Jesus, the Redeemer of the world.

In his commentary on Dan 9:27 Albert Banes, in his Notes on the Bible, reaches this very important conclusion, that the disciples “had to turn away from the ‘covenant people’, and to go to the Gentiles”. In this way “he shall make a firm covenant with many” (Dan 9:27, ASV), which is then in effect the offering of the New Covenant to all that were non-Jews. The misunderstanding of this passage in the prophetic books of Jeremiah and Daniel is the main cause for deceptive teachings about the Jews, the rapture and the great tribulation. (This will be discussed in more detail later.)

What exactly does this New Covenant entail, this “blood of the (new) covenant” (Heb 10:29)? Rom 3:25a articulates it succinctly – “whom God set forth as propitiation by His blood, through faith”. The Good News Bible translates it as follows – “God offered Him, so that by his blood He should become the means by which people’s sins are forgiven through their faith in Him.” Jesus had “redeemed us to God by [His] blood” (Rev 5:9). On account of this perfect sacrificial blood Eph 2:13 is made possible – “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” Rev 1:5 explains that we are cleansed of our sins through His blood. It is as Isaiah had prophesied many years earlier – “Though your sins are like scarlet, hey shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” A poetic manner of translating Eph 1:7 – “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” Or Col 1:14 – “in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins”.

But the blood offers not only a certain cleansing power; it also offers justification (1 Tim 3:16), the second focus we have been elucidating since the teaching of Day 272! Rom 5:9 articulates it thus – “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”
