day 798-799

“that prophet … has urged mutiny against GOD, … who redeemed you from a world of slavery and put you on the road on which GOD has commanded you to walk. Purge the evil from your company.” (Deut. 31:5, Message)

We are currently discussing the kundalini manifestation of the fortune-telling spirit. In Sanskrit the word kund means “to burn”, and kunda: “to coil or to spiral”. Within Hindiusm there is of course the common belief that every person has a latent (symbolic) snake coiled up at the base of their spine.

Donning International Encyclopedic Psychic Dictionary provides the following extensive description of the term ‘kundalini’: “a concentrated field of intelligent, cosmic invisible energy absolutely vital to life; beginning in the base of the spine as a man or woman begins to evolve in their first incarnation; fed by the chakras along the spine and by the cosmic energy entering through the feet from the earth; as wisdom is earned in each incarnation, this electromagnetic, ultrapotent energy moves slowly upward through the spine …” (p. 343).

A direct translation of the word ‘kundalini’ is “the serpent power” – this is why certain Biblical spirits also refer to the fortune-telling spirit as “the snake-spirit” (CJB) or a “pythonical spirit” (DRB and LITV), or even “a spirit of Python” (EMTV, YLT and Rotherham).

Usually the power of the kundalini is obtained by practicing yoga, which is accompanied by meditation, chanting and the laying on of hands by a guru. This is their way to supernatural power and godliness. Yet experts in the field warn that kundalini yoga and related activities can lead to mental disturbance, nervous breakdowns, psychosis, oppression and demonic possession.

Christina and Stanislov Grof, New Age writers of the book The Stormy Search for the Self, make it clear that kundalini energy can be transferred by any spiritual person without him or her necessarily underwriting the philosophy behind it. This means that Christian preachers can transfer this spirit without him or her realising what he or she is doing.

One of the Hindu gurus, Sri Ramakrishna, explains the manifestations of the kundalini spirit: “He daily went into ’samahdi,’ a trance in which one involuntarily falls down unconscious and enters a rapturous state of super-conscious bliss (ananda), complete with beautiful visions and often involving astral projection. These states could last anywhere from a few minutes to several days and were often accompanied by uncontrollable laughter or weeping. He could send others into this state with a single touch to the head or chest.” Readers may recognise the similarities with the Toronto blessing of a decade or two ago. Rodney Howard-Browne, one of the most influential proponents of the movement, said that “God will move in diverse ways and with diverse anointings in these last days.” But alas this is often not the salvation of the Holy Spirit, but of the kundalini spirit.

Here is a tabled comparison of certain unmistakeable manifestations in the Protestant and Charismatic church circles and how they correspond with certain similar manifestations in the spiritual experience of Hindus and New Agers who are brought to spiritual awakening by the kundalini spirit:

Pensacola/Toronto Manifestations Kundalini Yoga Manifestations
Uncontrollable laughter Laughing and weeping are as unintentional and uncontrollable as hiccoughs
Spasms Jerking, Tremors, Shaking
Involuntary body movements Postures or moving one’s body in unusual ways
Being “slain in the spirit” Spontaneous trance states
Making animal noises, roaring Spontaneous vocalizations
Being “drunk in the spirit” Muscle twitches or spasms
Visions while “slain Guidance through inner voices, visions, dreams
Mental confusion Mental confusion, difficulty concentrating
Feeling heat, electricity Energy rushes, electricity circulating in the body
Jumping “po-go-ing” Vibrating, tingling sensations
Supernatural smelling of scents Experiencing the smell of flowers, incense
How one receives this “Blessing”
THROUGH THE LAYING-ON-OF HANDS CALLED AN IMPARTATION BY SOMEONE
How one receives Kundalini Awakening
THROUGH THE LAYING-ON-OF-HANDS DURING “SHAKTI-PAT” INITIATION
Who can administer the “blessing”
ANYONE WHO HAS RECEIVED IT FROM A PERSON ALREADY “BLESSED.”
Who can give Shakti-pat?
ANYONE WHO HAS RECEIVED THE ABILITY FROM THE GURU OR ONE OF HIS DISCIPLES.

One of the pioneers of the worldwide prophetic movement of the early nineties, Andrew Strom of New Zealand, distanced himself from the movement in no uncertain terms, in a worldwide declaration: “Since 1993-4, I believe a foreign spirit has been allowed to invade the church – first through Rodney Howard-Browne’s ministry – then Toronto, then the Prophetic movement (which I was part of at the time) and on into Lakeland and many other ministries and movements. I urge people now to ‘test the spirits’ just as we are commanded to in Scripture. Do not let just anyone lay hands on you. This is a powerful spirit and it has the backing of a lot of big-name ministries. In fact, these men and women are the very ones responsible for allowing it to spread right through the body of Christ. And one day they will be answerable to God for doing so.”

What is especially disturbing is that the following is mentioned on a Kundalini website: “Usually the awakening of Kundalini was a process which only occurred after years of spiritual practice and meditation. Yet increasingly, the Kundalini experience is being reported among people who are not undertaking spiritual practices. Since 1993, when Shared Transformation, an American journal for connecting spiritual awakeners first began, it has been contacted by OVER 700 people in the throes of spontaneous kundalini arousal (Collie & Kree, 1995). These increased reports of spontaneous Kundalini awakening at this time of planetary upheaval may be indicative of a larger purpose at work, the beginning of a planetary wake up call.”

In addition to the fact that the true reformation has been stolen in this way, many believers still function in the kundalini spirit, merely mimicing the power of the Holy Spirit.
