Bible translation from the original languages, and from the different available traditional texts, is a very complex undertaking. Notwithstanding the exactness of the translation process, it so happens that the translator’s dogma mainly determines how things are finally formulated. There are always detail which is “lost-in translation”, but often there are unfortunately also words added, chiefly due to the fact that the intricate Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek languages, style figures and syntax are difficult to translate, thus leaving room for wider interpretation. The very best English translation, in my opinion, is the New American Standard Bible. Paraphrases such as The Message and the remarkable The Mirror Bible, are very good for leisurely reading, but are no good as study bibles. Avoid also commentary Bibles like the latest versions of The Spirit-filled Bible. Certain translations, such as The New International Version, God’s Word and The Good News Bible, are translations which should preferably be avoided due to various reasons.
